Our Investment in a New Surface Mount Technology Line

Newly added SMT line improves efficiency

New Surface Mount Technology Line at MJS Designs

MJS Designs is pleased to announce the investment in a brand new surface-mount technology (SMT) assembly line. SMT technicians are now using a total of three lines to increase the speed and improve the accuracy of printed circuit board (PCB) assembly. The new line can place up to 45,000 components an hour, doubling the capacity of product that can be built.

The new MJS Designs SMT assembly line is composed of three new machines:

  • The automated stencil printer is a Yamaha YCP10 with 2D solder paste inspection software to ensure stable and identical solder paste printing. It even has the capacity for ultra-small components (0.2mm x 0.1mm – 0.3mm x 0.15mm).
  • The Yamaha YSM20R pick-and-place machine holds 128 unique components at a time with an accuracy of +/-0.035mm (+/-0.025mm) Cpk≧0 (3σ) (as thin as a strand of hair). The two types of new heads are developed with the ideal of the “one-head solution” concept, which allows compatibility with a wide range of components at high speeds without the need for head replacement. With 10 nozzles, it places components ranging in size from 0.2mm x 0.1mm to 55 x 100mm.
  • The reflow oven is a BTU Pyramax 125 with 10 oven zones. Heating is accomplished via forced impingement convection, with side-to-side gas recirculation. Each zone uses BTU’s Porcupine II heating element. This element features a low-mass, high-surface-area open-coil wire arrangement for fast response time and high reliability. This oven handles both lead-free and leaded assemblies.

The SMT technicians build a large array of complex assemblies for a variety of diverse PCB assembly customers.

The Benefits of Our New Surface Mount Technology Line for Our Customers

“With its laser placement and traceability, this new line is faster and more accurate. That means less rework at the end,” said Dominique Taylor, a senior manufacturing technician at MJS Designs. “In the 15 years that I’ve been here, cellphones and computers have continued to get smaller. That means manufacturing technology has to keep improving to handle the smaller surface mount components on today’s PCBs. MJS Designs invests in its equipment to make sure we always stay up to date with these changes.”

The new automated line has complete traceability down to the component manufacturer’s lot number. The pick-and-place machine is fully automated to alert the technicians of any deviation from the program or parts loaded onto the machines.

This new line shows a consistent pattern of MJS Designs investing in both our technology and our employees, and positions the company to continue to support our customer base with their advanced technology requirements.

MJS Designs seamlessly builds to your specifications through our advanced manufacturing process. We have more than 45 years of experience, from design to production.
