Training & Continual Education Are the Keys to Success

PCB engineers, designers and production teams stay up to date on training and certifications

At MJS Designs, each team member has the potential to wear multiple hats, and as our HR Manager Kirk Collins states, “The way to success here is the willingness to learn.”

We strive to help our team members absorb as much as they can from the moment they walk through the door on their first day. Few people make a career of just one role, and it is our hope that our employees gain knowledge via training or work experience at MJS Designs that will help them develop as they progress on their own individual path. Our company culture promotes opportunities for engineers, designers and technicians to learn and develop in and outside of our building.

PCB engineering, sourcing and assembly are extremely technical fields that require (and offer) continuous education and certification renewals. Our company culture embraces those opportunities because, in the end, they provide a more positive outcome for our customers.

It is our mission to give employees what they need to succeed through proper training and certifications.

IPC Certification

IPC stands for Institute of Printed Circuits. Our employees are required to complete this certification every two years. The certification programs are built around IPC standards and have been approved by the industry. This certification teaches employees the standards for how to build and make electronics work properly. Additional certifications our designers go through include IPC CID and CID+

We promote the following IPC certifications to our relevant staff:

IPC-A-610G is a visual quality acceptability requirement for electronic assemblers applied as manufacturing “workmanship standards.” Applicability of class/standard is determined by customer needs. MJS manufacturing capabilities include all three classes:

  • Class 1 – General electronic products
  • Class 2 – Dedicated service electronic products
  • Class 3 – High-reliability/military electronic product

IPC-J-STD-001G Certification includes GS Space Hardware Addendum, which provides additional requirements for those products that must survive the vibration and thermal cyclic environments of getting to and operating in space. This certification provides the first major revision of the J-STD-001 cleanliness requirements in over 25 years, and changes how the industry will address cleaning and residue requirements. Highlights of this amendment include a requirement for manufacturers of Classes 2 and 3 product for quality soldering and/or cleaning processes that result in acceptable levels of flux and other residues.

IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certification is for cable, wire harness and mechanical assemblies. The standard describes materials, methods, tests and acceptability criteria for producing mechanically secured and soldered interconnections, and the related activities associated with cable and harness assemblies.

Additionally, MJS Designs has on-site certified instructors for IPC-A-610G, J-STD-001G and IPC/WHMA-A-620 to help facilitate and lead additional coursework.

Our stockroom and quality control teams are PRO-STD-001 certified. This certification course is created for counterfeit component detection and prevention.

APEX Conference

IPC APEX EXPO is the premier event for the electronics manufacturing industry. This conference is attended by over 9,000 industry people each year it occurs. There are more than 100 education opportunities, with 45+ countries attending and over 400 exhibitors. Attendees learn about new technology and equipment, how to deal with challenges and issues, evaluate new machines and learn which ones are best. Each year, MJS Designs employees attend this conference to gain information from the professional development courses to help the company grow in new ways.

Our employees who attend the conference, and undergo any other relevant training, have the chance to implement their knowledge and development wherever appropriate and/or in the name of better customer outcomes.
